The Warrenton Training Center (WTC), a classified United States government communications complex spread across Fauquier and Culpeper counties in Virginia, has been protected by specialized federal police since its establishment in 1951.
While colloquially known as the "WTC Police," the security force is formally composed of federal police officers belonging to specialized federal protective services and Department of Defense law enforcement.
* Establishment (1951): WTC was built to serve as a highly classified communications facility, signals intelligence hub, and continuity-of-government relocation bunker. Federal armed security was immediately established to guard its four discrete stations (Stations A, B, C, and D) against espionage and unauthorized access.
* Jurisdiction & Authority: WTC is officially administered by the U.S. Army on behalf of the government, housing various intelligence, defense, and State Department operations. Accordingly, site security falls under the jurisdiction of specialized federal protective officers who are granted full law enforcement authority to protect the center's personnel, infrastructure, and classified materials.
* Evolution of Duties: During the Cold War, the WTC Police secured highly sensitive physical operations, including a "numbers station" that broadcasted coded messages to operatives abroad until 2003. In recent years, the force's protective mandate has shifted to safeguarding modernized infrastructure, including satellite communications ground stations and specialized cloud data centers constructed on-site by Amazon Web Services in 2018.
* Integrated Emergency Services: In addition to its federal police presence, the complex operates the Warrenton Training Center Fire Department to handle on-base medical and fire emergencies, often coordinating with local Fauquier and Culpeper county law enforcement for regional mutual aid.
