This is a Stunning, Operational, Antique Midland Jump Spark Cigar Lighter (Model L) with Original Parts and Complete Reference Book! This was manufactured by the renowned Davenport Mfg. Co. of Davenport, Iowa.

The capacitor is powered up and vibrating when a 6V battery is attached. As you can see from the video, it has spark; you can hear the capacitor is working properly and vibrating. There is no fuel in the tank in anticipation of shipping, so I have not tested it to flame. It appears it needs to be rewired at the top of the igniter.See photos. A portion of the porcelain on the side where the curved electrode wire emerges has been chipped off. However, it appears there is enough porcelain left to insulate the wire electrode from the surrounding metal frame as is evidenced by the spark. How it Works: Pushing down on the top, nickel-plated lever activates an internal electrical coil and dry cell batteries to create a spark that lights the fluid-soaked wick.
The Extremely Rare Bottom Paper Label: the original factory instruction and guarantee paper on the underside is still present and highly legible. This is incredibly rare, as most were worn away, water-damaged or scraped off over the past century. The bottom board has a clean crack that does not prevent the ability to read the instructions or for the box to sit solidly on a counter, just like the one used as a prop on the bar in "It's A Wonderful Life!"Historical Note: "New Batteries 19 June 1953"is handwritten on the back. This provides a clear historical marker showing that the lighter was still actively maintained and kept in service decades after its original normal manufacture date in the 1920s. This belonged to my great grandfather, Anton Sibilsky, owner (and pharmacist) of Superior Pharmacy, in Laurium, Michigan.
Also, the prior owner had a small drawing on a newspaper scrap of the battery layout, apparently. The newspaper can be dated to February 1936 because the reverse side contains the obituary text forJohn E. Rigaliand the Deprato Rigali History and Timeline confirms he passed away on February 26, 1936. Additionally, the adjacent article regarding tearing down the "Bleak British Prison" was a mid-1930s initiativeregarding Dartmoor Prison although the plan was halted due to the onset of WW II.
The book is included which further describes the history and operations of this unique beauty! Related Items:
