Antique real photo postcard depicting the historic Bristol School in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The photograph shows the original brick school building from across an unpaved street. Architectural details include a broad central entrance reached by concrete steps, projecting enclosed porches or classroom wings, a decorative curved parapet and a distinctive open bell tower or cupola rising above the roof. Mature trees frame the building and partially shade the school grounds.
The original Bristol School was located on Walnut Street on the west side of Colorado Springs. Historical references place the school at the northwest corner of Walnut Street and Rock Island Avenue, later identified as the Monument Street and Walnut Street vicinity. The original school property dated to approximately 1903 and served generations of children from Colorado Springs’ near west-side neighborhoods.
The school was named for Richard C. Bristol, an early figure associated with Colorado Springs education. The original Bristol School site was eventually redeveloped, while the present Bristol Elementary School continues to operate nearby on North Walnut Street.
This photograph is especially interesting for its clear view of the original building’s architecture, including the cupola, central entrance and early streetscape. The dirt or gravel roadway, simple utility poles and surrounding residences help document the appearance of this Colorado Springs neighborhood during the early 20th century.
The reverse has an AZO stamp box with four upward-pointing triangles, a design generally associated with real photo postcards produced during the 1904–1918 period. The postcard was never mailed and has no postage stamp, postmark, address or written correspondence. A small pencil notation appears near one corner of the reverse.
An attractive and locally significant Colorado school photograph with appeal for collectors of Colorado Springs history, historic educational buildings, El Paso County, Western architecture, neighborhood history and early real photo postcards.
CONDITION
Good antique condition with moderate age and handling wear. The photograph has light fading, uneven toning, scattered tiny marks, mild surface soiling and some loss of contrast consistent with age. The corners and edges show light wear, including minor rounding, small bends and slight surface loss.
A narrow vertical line is visible near the left-center portion of the image and may be a scratch, crease or photographic-development artifact. There are several faint marks in the sky and lighter areas of the photograph. The reverse has general age toning, light spotting, minor surface soiling and a small pencil notation near the upper-right corner. The card is unposted and remains intact. Please examine both scans carefully for the complete condition.
