Rare antique real photo postcard showing the original Glendoris Inn at Savoy in Spearfish Canyon, Lawrence County, South Dakota.
The winter photograph shows the rustic log inn surrounded by snow, with the towering limestone cliffs of Spearfish Canyon rising dramatically in the background. The name “GLENDORIS” is visible beneath the small covered entrance at the left. A rustic open-framework gazebo or garden structure stands prominently in front of the lodge.
This is an especially desirable early view because the property operated under the Glendoris name for only a relatively brief period.
The site began as part of the McLaughlin Tie and Timber Company’s sawmill operation at Savoy. During the first decade of the 20th century, the former sawmill property was converted into the Glendoris Inn, generally recognized as the first resort and public lodging establishment in Spearfish Canyon. Historical accounts place its opening around 1907–1909.
The name “Glendoris” reportedly combined the names of early proprietor Glen Inglis and his wife, Doris. The lodge welcomed railroad travelers, hunters, fishermen and tourists exploring the northern Black Hills. Notable visitors associated with the early resort included Seth Bullock and Theodore Roosevelt.
In 1919, new owners purchased the Glendoris and renamed it the Latchstring Inn, reportedly because the lodge doors were opened using traditional latchstrings. The Latchstring became a longstanding Spearfish Canyon landmark and continues today as the Latchstring Restaurant near Spearfish Canyon Lodge.
The original resort buildings were eventually judged beyond repair and were demolished in 1989. A new log structure was erected on the historic site. This photograph therefore documents the early Glendoris period rather than the later and more familiar Latchstring Inn.
The visible Glendoris name and the property’s 1919 renaming suggest that this photograph dates from approximately 1907–1919.

CONDITION
Fair to good antique condition with noticeable age and handling wear. The photograph has general fading, sepia toning, uneven exposure, scattered spots, surface marks and light soiling. The corners are rounded and worn, with additional edge wear and minor creasing or surface cracking. A dark photographic border remains visible along the upper edge. There is a small stain or discoloration near the lower-left corner.
Despite the age-related wear, the log building, Glendoris entrance sign, rustic gazebo, snow-covered grounds and canyon cliffs remain clearly visible. Please examine the supplied image carefully for the complete condition.
