In excellent condition.Robert Buchanan was one of the last living eyewitnesses to the Hindenburg disaster of May 6, 1937, when the German airship burst into flames while attempting to land at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in New Jersey. He was just 17 years old at the time, serving as one of more than 200 ground crew members waiting to help moor the airship when it suddenly caught fire. Buchanan was among more than 200 ground crew members waiting in rainy weather when the Hindenburg came in with 61 crew and 36 passengers. Flames roared across the surface of the airship only about 100 feet above him, singeing his hair as he ran for his life. He later credited his damp clothing that day with helping save him from the worst of the heat as he fled the burning wreckage. Buchanan went on to speak publicly for decades about his experience, becoming a fixture at Lakehurst's annual Hindenburg remembrance events and a key voice in historical accounts of the disaster, including interviews that contributed to later theories about what ignited the airship's hydrogen. He remained one of the last surviving witnesses to the tragedy well into his late 80s, offering firsthand testimony that helped keep the event's memory alive for later generations.
