Captain John M Deane, 29th Massachusetts and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for defending Fort Stedman during the Confederate Assault of March 25, 1865.. An Original Civil War personal copy letter from Deane, in "Camp, 29th Mass Vet Vols Near Petersburg, Va .Feb 2nd 1865" to Captain Thomas W Clarke reporting the picket line is quiet, we are building a new pit to hold men on the Vidette, the main line of works at (Fort) Stedman is in bad repair, the abatis are destroyed and inexcusably the men are sent back to camp at Reville, 5 AM,the time when they are most needed. Confederate scouts spotted the disrepair and the poor performance of the Union pickets, inducing General Lee to launch his last Offensive on the Fort Stedman line 4 days later. The letter is acknowledged as received by 59th Massachusetts Captain Joseph Church.This letter was the personal copy of Captain Deane and came from his estate. Comes w service info.
