Ordnance Optics 4x18 rifle scopes were made in Japan for Klein\'s Sporting Goods in a period when Japanese optics were far better than anything manufactured at that time. This scope comes with a 1960\'s period Weaver side mount with paperwork. I have owned this rifle for many years. I occasionallysee these scopes for sale, but they are generally not correct with the logo beinga later variety than Oswaldused.. Oswald purchased his rifle from Klein\'s Sporting Goods from a 1963 American Rifleman magazine. In 1963, the rifle was $12.78 or $19.95 with this scope attached, (which Oswald opted for). Oswald had it shipped to a PO Box in Dallas under his alias \"Alex Heidell\".
When Klein\'s Sporting Goods sold these rifles, per the WC Report, they employed a young 28 year old handyman to install the scopes (if the customer wanted a scope and paid the extra $8). The rear edge on many of these mounts was ground off by Klein\'s \"gunsmith\" as was Oswald\'s rifle... This was done to allow Klein\'s to not have to drill and tap so many holes in the gun. There are pictures of the original rifle assassinationrifle that LIFE magazine was allowed to photograph in 1983 from the National Archives where it is stored. I think this is the only time except for Warren Commission photos that it was allowed to be photographed by someone in the press.
You will occasionally see these scopes for sale, but be VERY careful because some of these scopes were sold later in the 1970\'s by Martin B. Retting Co in Culver City CA. These later scopes have an incorrect symbol stamped into the scope unlike this original. Scopes like this one are just rarely seen in decent condition.
There is something also very important that other sellers seem not to understand about the markings on the correct scope. The CORRECT Ordnance Optics scopes have a \"cloverleaf\" design and initials of \"OSC\" within the three leaf clover. For direct testimony verification of what IOswald ordered and used, please see circled portion of the Warren Commission report that explains what Oswald\'s scope looked like. I have included that portion of the Warren Commission report in this sale to read. This verifies the exact model of scope that Oswald used. This scope has the correct cloverleaf and OSC markings just like Oswald\'s did.
This 1960\'s era side mount is actually very sturdy and looks to be dead centered. This scope, mount and hardware are perfect for someone wishing to finish their JFK assassinationCarcano. Crosshairs are fine and correct and optics are clear. The scope and mount are not brand new, but show some wear from 60 years, but overall in quite nice shape.

The rifle is still considered a firearm and obviously does not allow, nor will I allow it to be sold.The scope is original 1960\'s vintage as shown and is very bright and clear with nice undamaged crosshairs. The crosshairs are present and intact and in good shape.I have an acquaintance that makes a exact reproduction of the sling that Oswald fashioned from a USAF shoulder holster. He sometime lists them on as well.
