Unique c.1890s Needlework Sampler

"What is Home Without a Mother?"

From the John Ware Mansion - Oxford, PA

Provenance: This sampler was purchased at an sale house located within 10 miles of the Ware Mansion (Oxford, Pennsylvania). It came with the provenance attached to the back, stating that it came from Ware Mansion, and the sale house repeated that same provenance at the time of sale.

History: The Ware Mansion was constructed in 1888 and converted into a sanitarium by its then owner, Dr. Lent; it later served victims of the Spanish Influenza of 1918. It was purchased in 1926 by John Ware, Jr., who lived there until his death in 1963, at which time it passed to Sen. John Ware III. The senator donated the mansion and its extensive property to Presbyterian Homes of Central Pennsylvania for use as a retirement care village--a purpose it continues to serve to the present day. (In fact, my wife worked at the Ware Presbyterian Village taking care of the elderly.)

I cannot say who the "Chris and Judy" mentioned in the provenance might be. However, the sampler and its frame speak for themselves, indicating a one-of-a-kind needlework piece dating to c.1890s. Since it came from Ware Mansion, that means it predates the Ware family's ownership of the building, so it likely dates to the period when Dr. Lent owned the property. If this sampler could speak, it would surely recount sad stories it witnessed from the time of the Spanish Influenza.

DIMENSIONS (approx.): Visible art is about 15" x 18". Framed size is 18" x 21".

[ CONDITION... ]

- Please review all the photos carefully. The foundation material shows significant age darkening, some chipping at the edges, and dampstain near the bottom, as pointed out in the photo.

- The needlework -- which is a lovely red, white, and blue, plus green leaves -- has some age fading but the colors are still relatively strong. Minor loss of stitching, mostly in the word "Home" (see final photo).

- The frame is solid wood, with age wear and a bit of chipping ... lovely antique character.

The above is my good-faith attempt to disclose all noteworthy issues. Keep in mind that vintage/antique items always show their age. (Don't we all!?) It would be impossible to mention every tiny detail, so please expect that there will be something about this item (or lot) that's not perfect and may need touch-up.

PLEASE SUPERSIZE ALL PHOTOS, AND ASK ALL QUESTIONS BEFORE offerDING/BUYING. I'LL BE GLAD TO ANSWER.

Please be aware -- as with ALL antique and vintage paintings, prints, and other framed items -- that there is a potential (though unlikely) that the original paint on the frame may contain lead compounds, and (even MORE unlikely, though possible) asbestos-related materials. If this is a concern, one option is that you can apply a clear matte sealer over it so nobody comes in direct contact with the original paint.
